1. Intermittent problems with the FIND search box
When using the ENTER key on the keyboard to start the search for a word in the FIND search box, and the search item results in one entry
only, the definition defaults to the first entry in the entry list, i.e. 0898. However, if search item has more than one result,
the list is displayed correctly in the RESULTS tab. A workaround for this problem is to click on the find button to start the
search, instead of the ENTER key on the keyboard. This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
2. Runtime error R6034 when opening the OED
When opening the OED in Windows, some customers have seen a Runtime error message R6034. In some cases the message appears
two times and then OED opens, in other cases the OED does not open at all. This problem can be fixed by following the
steps below.
- Open the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\OED v4.0\ (assuming that is where the OED is installed)
- Right-click on OED.EXE and choose RENAME from the menu. Rename the file to OED.EXE.OLD
- Download the zip-archive oed.zip
- Extract the new OED.EXE from the downloaded file into the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\OED v4.0\
- Start the new OED.EXE
3. Problems with pronunciation searches in ADVANCED SEARCH
Some of the special characters used in the ADVANCED SEARCH for searching pronunciations either give incorrect results, or
cannot be typed into the search box. This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
4. Capped search result disables all further searching
When searching for a frequently used word in the ADVANCED SEARCH, the results are capped to show only the first 100,000 results.
This is normal, but any further searches in the ADVANCED SEARCH results in an erroneous message stating No matches/No match could be made in any
entry. This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
5. Entry list wheel not responding correctly when searching for number entries
When typing numbers into the QUICK search box, the entry list wheel only responds to the first digit typed in, e.g. 1 moves the entry wheel
to the entry 101, but then typing in 9 does not move the entry wheel to the entry 1984. This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
6. When printing large entries, text repeats itself
When printing large definition entries, the text on the second and third pages starts repeating itself. This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
7. Definition numbering appears twice when copying and pasting text
When copying and pasting text from the definition (either by selecting and using CTRL + C, or by using the COPY button) definition numbering
appears twice when pasted into a document. This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
8. Problems and general advice for installation on Windows
Many customers have found the installation process rather cumbersome. If having difficulty installing, here are a couple of pointers.
- Most problems during installation are linked to the process of having to swap CDs during the course of
the installation. When swapping disks over, either at the point when checking for the previous version if using the upgrade,
or when prompted for the Data Disk, be sure to allow the disk to spin up and cancel the autorun if it appears. The installation setup clashing
with the autorun on inserting a disk seems to be the main cause of installation problems.
- During installation, the setup appears to stop responding. Even if the title bar states that the installation
has stopped responding, it is still continuing in the background. We found that this occurred at 4% and at 98% of the installation.
The best thing to do is to go and make a cup of tea and leave it several minutes.
9. Problems with the SecuROM Authentication when opening the OED for the first time
When opening the OED for the first time, a message appears requesting the Original CD to be placed in the drive. This is
actually referring to the Installation CD. When putting the Installation CD back in the drive, be sure to wait for the disks to spin
and to cancel the autorun when it appears. This is crucial; otherwise a battle begins between the SecuROM Authentication and the autorun to start
the installation again. Eventually the SecuROM Authentication gives up and produces a message stating that authentication could not complete
within the given time limit. A good way around this would be to put the installation CD in the drive (after installation) and then restart the machine
with the CD still in the drive. This will prevent the autorun trying to start the installation again and then enable the SecuROM authentication to complete
successfully.
10. Problems printing large definitions
When attempting to print large definitions, the printer successfully prints the first few pages, but eventually stops before the entire
definition has finished printing. This bug has been reported to the developer.
11. Adjectival form of 'set' appears in the wrong place
When searching for 'set' the result defaults to the adjectival form of the word instead of main definition.
This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
12. ALT + F4 keyboard shortcut does not work to close the OED
This bug can be fixed by clicking on the following link to install version 4.0.0.3 of the OED.
13. Using Windows 7 or MacOS Lion 10.7
Although the OED was developed before the release of Windows 7 and MacOS 10.7, tests have shown that the OED
installs and functions correctly. The only thing worth noting is that sometimes on Windows 7 64 bit, a message may appear
after installation saying 'This program might not have installed correctly....' Simply click cancel and attempt to open the
sofware as normal.
