1: Problems with scrolling mouse

This is an intermittent problem that has been reported concerning the use of a scrolling mouse button which does not work on some programs whilst the SOED is open. Once the SOED is closed the scrolling mouse behaves correctly in all programs. Unfortunately this problem has not been resolved yet.

2: Clicking on link causes computer to freeze

When using Advanced Search for caf#eacu#, as in the shown in the manual page 12, clicking on the entries for “estaminet” and “zinc” cause the computer to freeze. This has been reported to the developers who are in the process of producing a patch to fix this problem.

3: Error message - “Error initializing the printer. Out of memory”

This problem usually occurs on Windows 2000 computers which have the default printer set as a shared printer, attached to another computer on a network. If the machine acting as a printer server is not switched on when the SOED is opened, the above error messages appear. To resolve this problem, either switch on the printer server, or set the default printer on the Windows 2000 machine to a generic local non-existing printer.

4: Soft g special character appears incorrect

In Old English etymologies containing a “soft g”, the “g” comes out as the sequence &gacu; This has been reported to the developers who are in the process of producing a patch to fix this problem.

5: Incompatibility with NOD32 Antivirus software

When using the SOED with NOD32 antivirus open in the background, the SOED becomes unresponsive. A workaround for this problem is to add the SOED data files to the exclusion list of the NOD32 program. This will ensure that the Data files are not scanned while the SOED program is trying to search the database.

[1] Click on the NOD32 icon on the bottom right hand section of the Taskbar. This will open the NOD32 Control Centre.
[2] Open the RESIDENT MODULES AND FILTERS
[3] Click on AMON to open the Antivirus Monitor screen
[4] Click on the SETUP button
[5] Click on the EXCLUSION tab
    [6] Click the ADD... button
[7] In the DIRECTORY NAME: section, type in the short filename path to the OED folder, usually C:\PROGRA~1\OUP. It is important that the short filename is used in this section because the NOD32 does not recognize long filenames (such as C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUP)
    [8] Select the following settings;
  • Add to list PERMANENTLY
  • Exclude object DIRECTORY
  • Exclude subdirectories YES
  • [9] Click OK and close the AMON setup screen
