Technical Issues

1: Spelling mistakes not picked up by the Spellchecker version 1.0
2: Problems using the Spellchecker with MS Project
3: Pronunciation font appears incorrect or a boxes

1: Spelling mistakes not picked up by the Spellchecker version 1.0

If the Spellchecker does not always pick up spelling mistakes in one paragraph, but the same error in another paragraph is picked up, then this may be due to the Language Setting for the particular paragraph. In version 1.0 of the Spellchecker, the language setting must be set to English (UK) only for the Spellchecker to work correctly. If any other version of English is selected, the Spellchecker will not highlight errors in the text.

To check the language setting of the paragraph or document in Word, go to the menu TOOLS | LANGUAGE | SET LANGUAGE... The language highlighted in the window is the one set for the paragraph selected.

In version 1.1, the Spellchecker will highlight errors in text set with the language as English (US) or English (UK) but no other versions of English. For details of upgrading from version 1.0 to version 1.1, please contact UK Customer Service

2: Problems using the Spellchecker with MS Project

If when trying to spellcheck a Project the error message “Project cannot open main dictionary file” appears, this is usually due to the default language setting not being set to English (UK). In version 1.0 of the Spellchecker, the language setting must be set to English (UK) only for the Spellchecker to work correctly. If any other version of English is selected, the above error message appears.

This is because in Microsoft Office the dictionary data for all the versions of English are contained in one file. The file is overwritten by the Spellchecker installation with the Oxford Dictionary file. When an attempt is made to spellcheck a document that is set as another version of English, the data is not available for the spellchecker to complete successfully.

In Microsoft Project, the only way to change the default language setting for a project is to bring up the spellchecking window and selecting the default language from there. Unfortunately, once the Spellchecker is installed, this window is no longer accessible and so there is no way to change the default language except by uninstalling the Spellchecker, opening MS Project, changing the default language by calling up the Microsoft Spellchecker then reinstalling the Oxford Spellchecker.

In version 1.1, the Spellchecker file contains English (US) and English (UK) language settings but no other versions of English. For details of upgrading from version 1.0 to version 1.1, please contact UK Customer Service

3: Pronunciation font appears incorrect or a boxes

The Arial Unicode font is needed to view the pronunciation correctly. This font is available to install from your Microsoft Office installation CD. It may be the case that it is not installed on the machine. To check this, go to START | CONTROL PANEL | Fonts folder. Look for the font called Arial Unicode MS, or filename ARIALUNI.TTF.

If it is not on the system, it can be installed by going to START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon. Select Microsoft Office from the list and then click the CHANGE button. Depending on which version of Windows installed, a menu may appear with a choice of what to do next. Choose the option to Add or Remove items. Then a list should appear showing all items that can be installed on the machine. Choose to install the item Universal Font, which is in the Office Tools | International Support menu. This should install the Arial Unicode font and then the Spellchecker will display the correct phonetic description in the definitions.
