About the author

Norman Biggs is Professor of Mathematics at the London School of Economics and Director of the Centre for Discrete and Applicable Mathematics.

He studied at Cambridge University, after which he joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Southampton, before moving to Royal Holloway, University of London, and subsequently the London School of Economics.

His main research interests are in Algebraic Combinatorics, and he has written numerous papers and research monographs in this area. He has also written three textbooks, and a book on the history of graph theory http://www.oup.co.uk/isbn/0-19-853916-9.

He is currently General Secretary of the London Mathematical Society http://www.lms.ac.uk and has long served as a Member of the Council and as Librarian. His hobby is writing about numismatics and metrology, and he is a member of the Council of the British Numismatic Society.
