More about the Biosciences Student Panel

74% of our student panel members felt that being on the panel had helped them with their studies.

100% of our student panel members enjoyed being a member and would recommend joining the panel to their fellow students.

Here's how they put it...

"I have chosen textbooks to review that will improve my overall understanding of the scientific process/stats/experimental design, so they have improved my understanding of my subject."
James Nicholas Sleigh, University of Oxford

"It has allowed me to read more analytically to see how I would word things differently after understanding a topic."
Hamid Azizi, Queen Mary University

"One of the books you sent me as a review book literally covered so many aspects of my Biomedical Sciences course and laid it out in the most readable and enjoyable format!"
Sina Kahen, Royal Holloway, University of London

"The books i've reviewed have been course relevant so have acted as further reading and in some cases opened my eyes to job opportunities I hadn't previously considered."
Nicola Yvonne Edwards, University of St. Andrews

"I've been able to improve my scientific writing by reviewing and thinking more critically about the work of others."

A little bit about some of the student panel members

James Nicholas Sleigh, University of Oxford
Student Panel Member

I graduated with an undergraduate masters in Biology (MBiol) from the University of Bath in 2009. In my third year I was lucky enough to work in the Hart Lab at Harvard Medical School on the neurodegenerative disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy. I am currently doing a PhD at the MRC Functional Genomics Unit at the University of Oxford furthering my study of the disease. Throughout my undergraduate career, I developed an interest in many areas of Biology including parasite resistance, bioinformatics, sexual conflict and in particular neuroscience. I hope to continue in a similar area of my PhD, with a view to one day running my own lab.

A degree in Biochemistry allowed me to develop a strong foundation in both Biology and Chemistry which is essential to a career in biomedical research. The structure of the program at the University of York gave me the freedom to explore my interests and tailor my degree towards a focus on immunology. With the research experience I’ve gained through my placement at GlaxoSmithKline I hope to be able to do a PhD in immunology. I also have an interest in bioethics.

Hristina Ivanova, University of Bath
Student Panel Member

I have just finished my second year as an undergraduate at the University of Bath studying Molecular and Cellular Biology. My interests cover aspects of molecular genetics and biotechnology, and in the future I am planning on a masters degree and a PhD in a field that integrates these subjects. I am excited about undertaking a placement year in industry with Lonza Biologics working on mammalian cell culture development. My experience as a member of the student panel has been invaluable and has significantly increased my writing skills and critical reading. In my spare time I love swimming and hiking and am I a keen photographer.
