Microbiology and infectious diseases are subjects of great importance to dentists, both to allow understanding of the basis of many oral diseases and to inform safe clinical practice. However, there are few microbiology textbooks that have been written specifically for dental students and professionals, and which directly link the science of the subject to the clinical situation. This book aims to fill that gap and to satisfy the requirements of modern undergraduate dental curricula, which stress integrated teaching of biomedical sciences in parallel with clinical training. The authors were also aware of the need to provide high quality illustrative material, particularly of clinical cases, to strengthen the clinico-pathological ethos of the book. We believe that to a large extent, the first edition of the book achieved these aims, but the dynamic nature of microbiology has necessitated significant updating of much of the material.
In summary, this book will serve as a core reference text for use throughout all years of the undergraduate dental curriculum, as a refresher course for postgraduate students and as a continuing source of reference for dentists in clinical practice. We trust that our efforts are sufficient to allow these very different groups of readers to obtain the information they require in a convenient, clear and interesting way.
