The Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant 2011

The Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant for 2011 was awarded to Coventry University Law School. Coventry University’s proposal submitted by principal lecturer, Sue Vickery, and her colleague, senior lecturer Janice Montague, was chosen for its originality and benefit to both the students and the local community.

“I am thrilled that Coventry University’s application was singled out. The £1,000 grant will help our students to develop both personal and professional skills and enable them to reach out and make a practical difference to some of the more vulnerable members of our community in the West Midlands.”

Sue Vickery, Principal Lecturer, Coventry University

The project involves students making short public information films on legal topics, aimed at assisting the ageing population in the West Midlands by providing clear information on such matters as arranging a power of attorney and understanding consumer rights. The finished work will be offered to national charitable bodies (e.g. Age UK and CABs) and local councils to add to the work that they already do with these communities. The students are currently writing the scripts and working on presenting the information with help from media students at the university, and it is envisaged that as the project develops, different communities will be targeted and a wider range of topics covered in the public information films.
