Our publishing in Law has grown significantly in recent years. Our commitment to high quality analytical publishing is recognised and respected in legal practice, in scholarly research, and in the policing community, and we aim to ensure that the Oxford brand signifies not only the highest quality of publishing, but also excellent service to our authors, customers, and to the wider legal community.
The Oxford brand
Oxford publishing comes with a reputation for offering incisive analysis by world-renowned authors and editors. As part of our commitment to quality we insist on peer-review of all titles, so that users of our works can be assured of their relevance and value and, equally, our authors and contributors receive expert advice and feedback on their projects. We aim to work in partnership with authors and editors, who benefit from expert in-house advice on content, approach and coverage. Researchers and information specialists are consulted about new publishing ideas, and work closely with us as projects develop. This is especially true of our online services, which are the fruit of several years’ collaborative planning and development.
We work very hard to ensure that we also offer a high level of author care and customer service. Authors have a dedicated team of editorial, production and marketing staff to work with them on making their book a success. Customers, both individuals and book trade partners, should find their experience of dealing with OUP both fruitful and positive, as evidenced by Oxford University Press winning the Publisher and Distributor of the Year Award for four years running from 2005 to 2008 (awarded by the Academic, Specialist, and Professional Group of the UK Booksellers Association).
Scholarly law
For many years Oxford has been the market leader in scholarly law. Our list focuses on the areas of public international law, European law, human rights, constitutional law, legal theory and jurisprudence, with books also published on a wide range of other topics. The extensive journals programme brings the latest research to readers’ desktops in a complementary range of topics. We are also proud of the reception given to our online research services Oxford Reports on International Law and the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law, which provide unique and indispensable resources for academics. The investment we have made in these services, along with the Oxford Law Citator, which brings together items mentioned in all our new online services, demonstrates our continuing commitment to bringing the best quality of scholarship to the market.
Practitioner law
OUP’s practitioner law publishing is now a central part of our law programme, and in 2009 we will publish in the region of 100 new works and new editions for the legal practice market. Our approach has been to develop portfolios of products in sectors where information needs turn on quality of analysis. We have an ongoing process for consultation and engagement with practitioners and legal information specialists to understand their requirements and how best they like to use information, and we have developed our content across multiple formats including books, looseleaf services, periodicals and online services.
Key sectors for us include intellectual property, competition law, banking and finance law, international arbitration, company and insolvency law, crime and human rights and public law. These portfolios are all gaining strong reputations, as more and more we find Oxford works are being cited as authorities.
Police and law enforcement
From our initial commitment to study materials for the Sergeants and Inspectors exams, we have built a suite of learning and practical resources designed to ensure that law enforcement officers have the best information on up-to date law accessible when and where they need it. The Blackstone’s Police Manuals remain the cornerstone of the list and the only training product officially endorsed by the National Policing Improvement Agency, and we have developed the various Blackstone’s police handbooks in response to force information needs. The Blackstones Practical Policing Series now contains over a dozen titles which support professional development and key specialist skills for police officers.
