There follows a brief description of what will happen to your typescript once it has been delivered. This is a general case and the specifics of your book might be different. Wherever possible we will use the electronic version of your typescript to produce your book. The time taken to produce your book does depend on the condition of your typescript - please follow the guidelines!
When your typescript is received we will first check that everything is there and be in touch if it isn't. You should include your completed marketing questionnaire with the typescript.
The typescript will be sent to a copy-editor who will correct any errors in grammar or spelling, check for internal consistency, and insert instructions to the typesetter.
If there is work to be done on your illustrations, they will be passed to our technical graphics department.
You will be sent page proofs to check and correct. The proofs will have been checked by the typesetter and OUP staff so there shouldn't be any major errors. At this stage, your corrections must be kept to a minimum and be space-for-space as we cannot repaginate. Unless the proofs are heavily corrected you will not see another round of proofs. Corrections will be checked by OUP staff. We ask that you do not take more than a few weeks to return your corrected proofs.
If there are any colour plates in your book, you will be sent proofs separately. You will also receive a proof of the cover to check.
Unless prior alternative arrangements have been made with your editor to have a freelance indexer prepare the index you will be sent a second set of page proofs from which to compile the index. You will be given some guidance on preparing an index and should return your index a week after the corrected page proofs.
Once the proof corrections have been approved, the final text will be sent to a printer and the book printed and bound. An advance copy will be sent to OUP for approval and once the book has been approved, you will be sent your gratis copies. The bulk of the printed copies will then be moved into our warehouse (in Corby) and all orders fulfilled.
