Typescripts

This page tells you the best way to submit your typescript to OUP to make the production process as quick and painless as possible. If you are NOT going to submit an electronic version of your typescript, please inform us now!

Delivery

Assuming you are submitting an electronic copy, you must also submit a hard (paper) copy of your text. The two versions should be identical. If they are not, then the electronic version will be taken as correct.

The preferred delivery route is on disk: PC or Mac, 3.5 inch floppy disks, or ZIP disks. Optical disks are not supported. FTP delivery is available. Email is only suitable for the delivery of urgent last minute figure replacements and originals should be posted immediately.

Make sure that you indicate clearly either on the disk or on a separate piece of paper exactly what is on the disk, and in what format it is presented.

When naming electronic files split the book up into chapters and name them numerically e.g. chap01.doc, chap02.doc etc.
Figures should be named numerically by chapter and figure number e.g. fig1-1.tif, fig1-2.cdr etc.
Do not: use author names for each chapter; use chapter names for each chapter, or send more than one version of each chapter.

To avoid loss or damage in transit ensure that the disk is adequately protected and always keep a copy of the data on your computer and/or back-up disk.

Text

The following word processor formats are supported:
  • PC Word 8, 7, 6, and 2
  • Mac Word 5.1, 6, and 7
  • PC WordPerfect 5.1, 6, and 8
  • Tex and Latex
If you use a different format please tell us what you use at the outset.

Figures

Line drawings

The following drawing packages are acceptable in current and retrospective versions:
  • Native CorelDraw
  • Illustrator
  • Freehand
  • Chemdraw

Scanned images

TIFF, BMP or JPEG files are acceptable. Scanned images should be at high resolution. OUP will need to confirm that they are of a suitable quality for publication. When scanning images the following minimum d.p.i. settings should be used:

  • black & white line diagrams: 800 d.p.i.
  • grayscale and colour pictures: 300 d.p.i.

We can often convert any EPS or PICT files exported from drawing packages. If your figures are stored in a file format not listed above, please send a sample of both the native files and, if possible, copies saved as EPS or PICT.

Note

  • Figures should always be supplied separate from the text.
  • In addition to electronic figures, please send a high quality printout.
  • Figures imported into Word or produced in Powerpoint are NOT suitable for publication.
  • Scanned images should not be imported into Word for labelling. Please supply the original scanned images.
