Technical Issues
1: Error message - Cannot read from drive D:\
Unfortunately it isn't possible to configure the OED program to know which drive letter to expect the data CD-ROM to be in. The OED program cannot distinguish between a CD-ROM drive and other removable drives. The program simply looks in the first removable drive, usually a Zip drive, to see if the OED data is present. On finding that this drive is empty, the above error message, or similar, appears. If at this stage the CANCEL button is clicked, the OED program continues and checks the next removable drive. Alternatively, if a disk is placed in the first removable drive, the OED will then find that the data is not present, and move on to the next drive without giving an error message.

2: Cannot find the CD-ROM when CD drive letter is set to X:, Y: or Z:
When the CD drive letter is set to X:, Y: or Z:, the OED is not able to find the CD-ROM drive and therefore not able to open the program. The CD-ROM drive letter can be changed using the DEVICE MANGER which is found in the SYSTEM control panel.

3: Fonts appear unreadable, in Greek or as boxes
If the Dictionary of National Biography is installed on the computer, then please see Technical Issue number 4: for details on how to tackle this problem.
Problems displaying fonts usually happen because the fonts have become corrupted, damaged, or are simply missing from the computer.
To correct this problem in MacOS:
Delete the OED_FONTS.SUIT from the FONTS folder in the SYSTEM folder. Restart the Mac, and copy the OED_FONTS.SUIT from the installation disk.
To correct this problem in WINDOWS:
Delete the OED fonts (list shown below)from the computer using the FONTS Control panel. Check also that none of these fonts are found in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, deleting them if necessary. Restart the computer, and run the OED install from the floppy disk to reinstall the required fonts.

4: Incompatibility between the OED and the DNB fonts
There is a known problem between the OED fonts, and the fonts installed by the Dictionary of National Biography. If both programs are installed then the fonts can appear unreadable in both the OED and the DNB. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to uninstall both the OED and the DNB programs.
Use the list of fonts provided below to check that all the fonts associated with both these programs have been removed from the computer, deleting them if necessary. Check the FONTS control panel and also the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Once satisfied that all these fonts have been removed, restart the machine.
Install the OED in the usual way and verify that the fonts appear correctly in the program at this stage. Install the DNB choosing not to install the fonts when prompted. Once the DNB installation has completed, install the DNB fonts manually using the FONTS control panel. It is important to only install two of the DNB fonts, Oupdnb0 and Oupdnb1, leaving the others uninstalled.
