Technical Issues
1: General problems with Authentication
If you are experiencing problems with the authentication process, please try the followingsteps before contacting Customer Service
- Check that the correct CD-ROM is in the drive. The OED requires the Data CD to beplaced in the CD drive. If using the OED version 1 to 3 upgrade or the fullOED version 3.0 then it is the OED version 3.0 data disk that is needed. If using the OED version 2 to 3 upgrade then it is the OED version 2.0 Data disk that isrequired.
- Once an attempt is made to authenticate using the wrong CD-ROM in the drive, the OED needs to be closed and reopened before trying again, otherwise the authentication will fail even if the correct CD-ROM has been subsequently placed in the drive.
- When using the Windows 2000 or Windows XP, it is important to be logged into the machinewith Administrator permissions. For more information on how to log in as an Administrator, checkthe Microsoft Help on the particular machine.

3: Incompatibility with OED version 1
It is possible to have the OED version 1 and version 3.0 installed on the same computer, but in order for this to work, the two programs need to be installed in differentfolders. As a default the OEDv1 is installed to and OEDv3.0 is installed to C:\PROGRAM FILES\OED\OED CD V3 Each time the OEDv3.0 is opened and the FINISH button is clicked, the copy-protection software attempts to open the old OEDv1 giving an error message about not being able to find the correct CD-ROM. To resolve this problem uninstallOEDv1 and reinstall it to a different folder, e.g.

4: Error message - Not enough memory
The above error message occurs when clicking the SEARCH button from the OED homepage. A possible cause is a conflict between the OED and antispyware software installed on the machine. Webroot's Spy Sweeper is known to cause such an error message. As a test, disable the antispyware software and open the OED to see if it opens successfully. Unfortunately there is no workaround to solve this problem, except disabling certain components of the antispyware program.
5: Incompatibility with ARMON32.EXE
The ARMON32.EXE is a program called Access Ramp Monitor which is automatically installed bysome Internet Service Providers to montior internet access for marketing purposes. The programusually opens automatically when Windows starts. When ARMON32 is open and an attempt is made to open the OED, the result is usually an Illegal Operation message. To resolve this problem, theARMON32 should be disabled before opening the OED. Use the instructions below to guide you through this process.

6: Fonts appear unreadable, in Greek or as boxes
If the Dictionary of National Biography is installed on the computer, then please see Technical Issue number 7: for details on how to tackle this problem.
Problems displaying fonts usually happen because the fonts have become corrupted, damaged, orare simply missing from the computer. To correct this problem, delete the OED fonts (list shown below) from the computer using the FONTS Control panel. Check also that none of these fonts are found in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, deleting them if necessary. Restart the computer, and install the OED fonts from the folder TEMPFONTS folder found in C:\PROGRAM FILES\OED\OED CD V3\

7: Incompatibility between the OED and the DNB fonts
There is a known problem between the OED fonts, and the fonts installed by the Dictionary of National Biography. If both programs are installed then the fonts can appear unreadable in both the OED and the DNB. To resolve this problem, it isnecessary to uninstall both the OED and the DNB programs.
Use the list of fonts provided below to check that all the fonts associated with both theseprograms have been removed from the computer, deleting them if necessary. Check the FONTS control panel and also the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Once satisfied that all these fonts have been removed, restart the machine.
Install the OED in the usual way and verify that the fonts appear correctly at this stage. Install the DNB choosing not to install the fonts when prompted. Once the DNBinstallation has completed, install the DNB fonts manually using the FONTS control panel. It is important to only install two of the DNB fonts, Oupdnb0 and Oupdnb1, leaving theothers uninstalled.

This problem has been found to be connected to the copy-protectionsoftware and patch has been produced to fix this problem and is available from the
Authentication Drivers page.

14: C-Dilla Copy-protection software detected as SpyWare
The term spyware is used to describe computer software which gathers information about a personor organisation without their knowledge and transmits it to another party via the Internet. OUP uses C-Dilla to protect our copyright. It prevents the CD-ROMs from being copied and the dictionary files on them from being read by other software. It does not, however, collect anyinformation nor does it attempt to communicate via the Internet.
C-Dilla can be programmed in such a way that a net connection can be used to authenticate theproduct, but this is not how it has been programmed to work with the OED. C-Dilla protects the OED CD-ROM from copying by making it appear unreadable to CD duplication software. Itneither connects to the Internet nor affects the users hardware, so should not be regarded asspyware.

15: Error message - The INI file is corrupt when closing the OED
The error message above has been found to occur when closing the OED whilst logged into Windows XP as a Restricted User. Unfortunately there isn't a way of stopping this error from appearing each time the OED is closed, apart from logging into the machine as a Computer Administrator. There is no harm in continuing to use the OED as a Restricted User. Once themessage has been cleared by clicking OK, the OED closes normally.

16: Software Updates
A software update has been produced to fix a number of bugs dicovered after the release of theOED version 3.0. For more details on the specifics of these bugs, see Technical Issues 9, 10, 11 and 12.
To install the update, download the appropriate file below. Extract the files to a temporary folder and copy all the files to the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\OED\OED CD V3\BIN\ overwriting anyexisting files. Restart the machine before trying the OED.

17: Mac Compatibility
The decision has recently been made that development of a Mac version of the OED CD-ROM is not, at this time, a viable option.
We anticipate your disappointment that the OED will not be available for the Mac format and therefore wish to explain our position. The market for CD-ROM dictionaries is declining and Applecomputers have only a minority share of the desktop market. Moreover, although we are a university press we have to operate within normal commercial restraints and, even with the increase in thegeneral Mac market, Mac users are regrettably still not a significant enough proportion of our market to make Mac development financially viable for us.
We are developing web versions of some of our dictionaries. OED Online was published in March 2000, and is accessible from both PC and Mac platforms. There are subscriptions available for both individuals and institutions. For more information please see our web page www.oup.com/online/oed/
We would like to thank you for your interest in our dictionaries, which we do appreciate. If you would like your name to go on our database with regard to the OED for Macintosh so that we can let you know should the situation change in the future, please email your name and full postal address to UK Customer Service.

18: Incompatibility with Antivirus programs
Antivirus programs that scan files as they are being used, can cause problems when the OED is opened as the virus program attempts to scan the OED data files. This usually results in slow performance or the machine not responding at all. To tackle this problem, first try disabling the AntiVirus program before opening the OED. If the OED opens successfully and a search can be made, then this confirms that the Antivirus program is the source of the problem. To resolve this issue permanently, contact the manufacturer of the Antivirus software.

19: Incompatibility with NOD32 Antivirus software
When using the OED with NOD32 antivirus open in the background, the OED becomes unresponsive. A workaround for this problem is to add the OED data files to the exclusion list of the NOD32 program. This will ensure that the Data files are not scanned while the OED program is trying to search the database.
