Description

New Horizons showcases the wealth of exciting, innovative, and occasionally challenging choral music being written today. It encompasses the whole gamut of small-scale choral genres, both secular and sacred, and includes pieces for upper-voice and mixed choirs. With titles by some of the most accomplished choral composers active in Great Britain and abroad, the series introduces new repertoire and fresh talent to a broad spectrum of choirs.
New Horizons features composers with growing reputations for quality composition reflecting a strong individual voice. The series is continually expanding and should be the first place to look for attractive and performable contemporary choral music.

for SSA unaccompanied
This is the second and most intimate of the composer's 'Three Latin Motets'. Scored for upper voices, this gentle supplication to the Virgin is built on a plainchant opening, and contains expressive dissonances and suspensions in a setting of great purity and directness.

Suitable for

Blessed Virgin Mary

Reviews

  • 'In her Ave Maria Cecilia McDowall reminds us that the text is that of The Angelic Salutation, but the note is rendered unnecessary by the beautiful and haunting three- part writing . . . The overall effect is magical, though - a good, echoing stone venue is required.' -Music Teacher November 06
  • 'Cecilia McDowall may not be a familiar name to everyone, but several of her quietly accomplished choral works have now appeared in print, including here a SATB Ave Regina and a SSA Ave Maria, both from 2004, each made with the same clarity of structure and judicious, expressive use of dissonance.' -Matthew Greenall, The Singer Oct 06
  • 'In 55 bars the compression and economy of Cecilia McDowell's Ave Regina are impressive, but so too is the sense of spaciousness. The structure is underwritten by recurring appoggiaturas - bitter-sweets - supplying also a particularly characteristic flavour. Being slighly polytonal, tuning would have to be very accurate, but it would be well worth the effort in this sumptuous music where the expressive highlighting of key words gleams like episodes in a Chagall window.' -Peter Dale, Choir & Organ Sept 06
