Description

New Horizons showcases the wealth of exciting, innovative, and occasionally challenging choral music being written today. It encompasses the whole gamut of small-scale choral genres, both secular and sacred, and includes pieces for upper-voice and mixed choirs. With titles by some of the most accomplished choral composers active in Great Britain and abroad, the series introduces new repertoire and fresh talent to a broad spectrum of choirs.
New Horizons features composers with growing reputations for quality composition reflecting a strong individual voice. The series is continually expanding and should be the first place to look for attractive and performable contemporary choral music.

for SATB unaccompanied
This beautiful and spacious Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis setting of the Canticle of Mary is pure Jackson. Alternating stripped back, plainchant-style sections with homorhythmic passages for full choir, this music possesses an understated emotional intensity. The glorious key changes at the end of both the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis are spine-tingling. Appropriate for both Evensong and concert performance, this piece is well within the reach of most choirs.

Suitable for

Evening Prayer

Reviews

  • 'Gabriel Jackson, though accomplished in writing for many idioms, is rapidly becoming known as one of the country's leading composers for the church, widely performed and recorded up and down the country . . . Jackson's music is characteristically undemonstrative, eschewing superficial effect for a more firmly rooted, architectural language, and the Truro Service is a fine example . . . The litany-like alternation of verses allied with revolving harmony anchored around a static note give the work a unity and powerfully seated serenity that is deeply satisfying.' -Huw Morgan, Church Music Quarterly Sept 07
  • 'Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Truro Service) mixes solo chant and forthright SATB harmony in a setting that is at once un-showy and functional, yet characteristic in its occasional outbursts of ecstatic harmony.' -Matthew Greenall, The Singer, April 06
  • 'Gabriel Jackson's SATB Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Truro Service) inhabit a soundworld that is immediately approachable and singable.' -Christopher Field, Music Teacher, December 05
