| - 'REVIEWS OF EARLIER VOLUMES OF THE EDITION (VOLS. 1-5)
'this excellent volume of commentary . . . one of the chief strengths and pleasures of the volume [is] the thorough and illuminating use which it makes of annotated copies of books from Burton's own library. . . . a work on the grand scale, a magisterial counterpoint to the magnificent edition of the text . . . there are numerous examples of detective persistence and scholarly insight . . .'
Peter Davidson, Review of English Studies
'this magisterial Oxford edition . . . one rejoices that Burton has at last found editors of this stamp. . . . admirably level-headed introduction . . .' A. D. Nuttall, London Review of Books
'splendid volumes . . . Such an edition represents years of labor by a number of editors, and it will be of permanent value in any scholarly library.'
R. V. Young, Journal of English and Germanic' -

| Description | | - Moves Burton studies to a new level, illuminating his use of sources and transforming our understanding of his methods of composition.
- Concluding the edition, the commentary identifies Burton's vast array of sources for the first time, and explains his allusions.
- Provides an invaluable biographical and bibliographical index to the numerous other authors on whom Burton drew - both with and without attribution - correctly identifying many of them for the first time.
| | This, the final volume of the Clarendon Press edition of Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy
, contains commentary on the Third Partition, in which Burton considers two especial forms of the disease, Love and Religious Melancholy. In treating of these Burton had fewer precedents to follow than in previous sections, but he was able to draw largely on his extensive knowledge of classical literature
and also on his acquaintance with English drama and poetry (including popular verse). As ever his range of reference to other authors is wide, and the volume includes an index which gives biographical and bibliographical information concerning the more than 1550 authorities cited in the Anatomy
, most of whom are little known today. Also included are an index of the major topics discussed in
the Anatomy
, and a complete bibliography of all the works mentioned in the commentary.
