The current issue of the British Year Book is the 75th. The Year Book has established a reputation as showcase for the best in international legal scholarship and the journal of record of British practice in international law. Articles published in the Year Book address issues of current interest and continue to be cited for many years after publication.

There is no typical Year Book article. They range in length from ten to 100 pages and can cover any topic in public or private international law. They are selected on the basis of their high quality.

The annual surveys of important decisions of British and international courts and the collection of materials on UK practice provide an essential reference work for scholars, practitioners and officials.

Volume 70 marks an important change in the editorial team. After 25 years as an editor, Professor Ian Brownlie steps down and is replaced by Professor Vaughan Lowe, his successor in the Chichele Chair at Oxford. Professor James Crawford, Whewell Professor at Cambridge is now the Senior Editor.

Editorial Procedure

On receipt of a submitted article, both editors read and comment on it, usually within a period of 4 weeks. An indication will be given at that time of its acceptability or otherwise for the Year Book, and of any suggested changes. Deadline for final submission of articles in the any year is 1 September, but the editors welcome submissions or proposals at any time.

Following the submission date, articles and notes are copy edited by OUP under the expert hand of Mrs C. A. Hopkins of Girton College, Cambridge. The Year Book will appear in the following September.

Contributors are entitled to 1 free copy of the Year Book in which their contribution appears, plus 25 offprints of their contribution.

Writing for the Year Book

Publication in the Year Book is an important landmark in the career of an international lawyer. Scholars and specialists, whether just starting out in their careers or well established I them, have work published in the Year Book. As with all periodicals, the Editors are always happy to hear from prospective authors and discuss ideas for articles. There are two good reasons to consider the Year Book as an outlet for high quality pieces. Firstly, there is the chance to work closely with the editors, two professors of international renown. Secondly, there is no limit on the length of articles, so that some pieces that are too long for journals can be accommodated without compromising important content. Shorter articles are however also welcome, including short notes and comments (5-15 pages).

Authors should provide a short declaration that their work is unpublished and that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, whether by print or through electronic media.
