These dances were written to commemorate the Investiture of Price Charles as Prince of Wales, at Caernarfon Castle, in July 1969. Written to a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (who premiered this work on 22 June 1969), the Investiture Dances are based on characteristics of Welsh folk music rather than specific pre-existing tunes.
