100 Years of Oxford Children's Books

100 years of Children's books

What do the Scouts, Katherine Hepburn, Astrid Lindgren, and Oxford Children's Books all have in common?

The answer: They were all born in 1907.

Oxford University Press celebrates 100 years of Children's books this year and no doubt Katherine, Baden, and Astrid would have all approved of the centenary programme of publishing planned for this year.

In August 2007 Oxford will be launching the first titles in the new Oxford Children's Classics series. A selection of the most unforgettable children's stories have been brought together in a collection of complete, unabridged and competitively priced hardback. Titles to be included are The Hound of the Baskervilles, Little Women (Katherine Hepburn starred in the film version) Treasure Island, Jungle Book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (a book every Scout should read), Flambards, Party Shoes, and Anne of Green Gables. These beautifully packaged books are timeless classics for children to discover and adults to revisit.

One of the best loved authors of all time Astrid Lindgren would be delighted that Oxford is planning to bring her much loved character Pippi Longstocking to a whole new audience this year. In July Lotta says No! and Emil and the Great Escape will be published with translations by award winning translator Tina Nunnally. A new and irresistible Pippi Longstocking will appear in a gift edition come September featuring the illustrations of one of the most successful illustrators working today, Lauren Child.
