Round Earth, Flat Map

Globes are spheres, like the Earth, so you can see exactly where places are around the world. They are accurate but not very practical. To see places in detail you would need a very large globe. Awkward to carry!

People have experimented with folding globes and in the nineteenth century a man named Betts invented a globe on a stick. It opened and closed like an umbrella but the idea didn't catch on. Inflatable globes are a good idea too, but not if you get out of breath easily.

What's needed is a way of unwrapping the surface of the globe so it can be folded and put into a book...
