Working for Oxford University Press in the UK: the benefits to employees

Summary

A Working Partnership...

Oxford University Press is a leading academic and educational publisher and the largest university press in the world. The Oxford name is synonymous with quality and authority in publishing at every level. We recognize that our success depends on our staff and on the expertise and commitment that each person brings to their job. In return we aim to provide a range of pay and benefits which is competitve in the marketplace but also to reflect the Press's special values as an employer.

Preferred Working Hours

Most staff in Oxford work a 35-hour week, and many can work a system of preferred working hours whereby you can arrange your starting and finishing times with your manager, within certain guidelines. At Corby a variety of working patterns are available.

Holidays

Our holiday entitlement is 25 working days each calendar year, with enhancement for long service. We also operate a holiday banking scheme, which allows staff to bank part of their annual leave for special holiday requirements.

Training and Development

The Press's record in staff development is among the best in the industry. We have a well established appraisal system which assists in determining needs. Individual development is sustained by a variety of means including coaching and on-job training, as well as in-house and external courses.

Promotion Opportunities

The Press believes in promoting from within wherever possible and all vacancies are advertised internally unless there is an obvious candidate for promotion.

Pension Scheme

The Press offers one of the best pension schemes available. The scheme is flexible, and gives members the opportunity to plan ahead for retirement at age 65. The final salary pension scheme offers an opportunity for different accrual rates, and tiered contribution rates according to age. Life assurance cover for scheme members is four times pensionable salary.

Maternity/Paternity Benefits

Our maternity and paternity schemes provide leave and benefits significantly in excess of statutory entitlements.

Childcare

The Press retains a small number of places in the three University nurseries in Oxford, managed by a well established company with a wealth of experience in childcare provision. In addition, a childcare voucher salary sacrifice scheme is available to help parents with the cost of childcare by benefiting from tax and National Insurance savings.

Employee Assistance Programme

Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provides staff with a free and confidential information and counselling service on personal issues. The service is provided by an external organization which has solid professional experience of specialist employee assistance and guidance. The EAP helpline operates 24 hours a day, allowing you to seek advice about any problem from the privacy of your home.

Personal Accident

The Press operates a Personal Accident Insurance Scheme, the purpose of which is to provide a lump-sum benefit to staff in the event of death or injury as a result of an accident. The benefit applies at all times, whether or not you are on Press business.

Sickness/Disability

We operate a good short-tem sick pay scheme. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a long-term illness or disability, you could benefit from our Income Protection Insurance; it maintains a high proportion of your income, keeps you in the pension scheme, and protects your benefits from the effect of inflation.

Season Ticket Loans

We offer interest free season ticket loans to staff, which are repayable on a monthly basis from individuals' salary.

Bicycle Scheme

The Press operates a salary sacrifice loan scheme which allows staff to purchse bicylces with tax and National Insurance savings and spread the cost of the loan over 12 months.

Book Purchases

All members of staff are entitled to a 50 per cent discount on all OUP books, and books from other publishers can be ordered at trade discounts.

Restaurant, Espresso Bar and Shop

There are excellent catering facilities on both the Oxford and Corby sites providing a high standard of food, including healthy eating and vegetarian options, in the staff restaurant. On the Oxford site there is also an Espresso Bar serving a range fresh beverages and cakes, and a Shop selling freshly made sandwiches, baguettes, newspapers, magazines and other items.

Sports & Social

We have a sports ground in Oxford catering for soccer, cricket, tennis, and bowls. The Press also has a thriving non-audition choir under professional direction which meets on a regular basis. Its Christmas carol concert and May Day Madrigals have become traditions at the Press.

Other Benefits

We also have a range of other discounts and benefits available to staff. These currently include:
  • 20% discount on up to 4 tickets for most performances at the Oxford Playhouse
  • 10% discount at The University of Oxford shop, The Ashmolean Museum Shop, The Bodleian Library Shop, Bike Zone, and Summertown Cycles
  • Permits allowing access to Wytham Woods
  • Bodleian Reader's card free of charge
  • Free entry to the University Botanic Gardens and University Arboretum
  • Free use of the University Language Centre, with its range of reference books and language learning materials
